Dasein - be in the moment

Here’s why you shouldn’t bother with a Youtube channel or vlogging

I admire people such as Morten Hilmer, who create YouTube videos that look like well-done TV productions. Their camera work is impeccable, and it’s really engaging to watch. Or take Thomas Heaton. Filming oneself walking to and from the camera requires a lot of time, shooting, and hassle, all of which I can’t be bothered with. For me, my art is my card.

Don’t get me wrong. If I got an action camera and put it on me or used something like a DJI Osmo, I’d record my thoughts, etc., as I go on shoots. But the truth is that when I’m out shooting, I don’t want any distractions and want to focus on the job at hand. Whether I’m on vacation, on assignment, etc., it doesn’t matter. Why would I carry extra gear and spend extra time on setting gear up to film myself if I could have used that time shooting?

I don’t do photography full-time yet, and my time is precious to me. Also, I think that YouTube isn’t as profitable anymore as it used to be. In recent years, so many people have become content creators and social media stars that the sea we swim in has become more and more convoluted. So rather than becoming a small fish in the sea, I decided not to go down that route, and neither should you. But what do you think? Let me know in the comments below.
