The challenge of building and growing a photography business

So, some time ago, I posted that I wanted to take you on a journey of building my photography business, and here's a follow-up post on this. Now that I have set up my store and website, it's about marketing my website and my work. But you know what makes me nervous?

I feel that my work is not good enough. Having looked at other people's photos, I feel that my work doesn't cut it and that nobody is interested in buying my art. It's a scary prospect that gives me sleepless nights. I know from asking people, family, and friends who are known for being brutally honest that they love my work and tell me that I have a good eye (composition) and take good photos. This is great, but then we get to the point of pricing your work. People tend to always want to buy stuff for little to no money or, ideally, get it for free. They don't understand that we photographers spend a lot of time and effort to get shots. Funnily enough, when people buy abstract or modern art, they don't care that much about it.

Many of my photos required me to walk for hours or even travel to foreign countries. If I had broken down the cost of most of my photos, you would have been surprised by how much it would cost me to take the shot. By that, I mean taking a plane, staying at a hotel and buying raw materials. For my film photos, it's the film canisters. My digital work includes the memory cards, batteries, etc. Nothing comes for free. So, this is one of my follow-ups on how to grow my business.

Now I just need to find out where to advertise. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I don't like Instagram that much anymore. So, I'm trying to find out avenues that will get me in touch with the right buyers. I think the next post will be me telling you what I've been doing to get the right buyers. Which seems to be pretty difficult for me right now.

I'll do my best to document this, so it might come in handy for you. Take care, everybody.
